Blog Post 15: Entrepreneurship

My career plan is to be either a pharmacist or work in the field of forensics. Both of these fields fit that of the business person model, however it does also fit that of an entrepreneur. As I further self-evaluate what I want with my life I most fit under the category of a business person. I want to have the characteristics that are found in both the Entrpreneur and Business person models. If I could blend these two models I would want to work in a business that is already running. I still want to have time for family and personal life while still being able to live within my means and being financially free.

An area for improvement would be for me to allow others to help me and for me to ask for help. I have a problem in asking for help. I have a feeling that in being a business person rather than an entrepreneur I would be more inclined to ask for help before I find myself into much of a whole.

As far as who lives the happiest life, that of an entrpreneur or that of a business person, I think it is whoever is happiest with what direction there life has taken them. To each person the definition of happiness is different. Life is what you make it, if you are not happy with it change it.

Blog Post 10: Specific Ethical Question

The Morning After Pill:

Pharmacists are asked

Is it ethical to allow females to buy the morning after pill?

Argument for Yes- It is argued that yes it is ethical because it is giving the female the choice to control her life. Many say that it is not the sale of the pill that is the problem; it’s the education that people are receiving.

Argument for No- It is argued that no it is not ethical because every person is put on this earth for a reason. Who knows maybe you just killed the human being that would have discovered the cure for a certain disease(s). They also say that even if you didn’t intend on that happening you could also do embryonic stem cell research instead. Some argue that with the sale of this pill, it is giving younger people the idea that having sex before they are ready is ok because they will have the pill.

As a pharmacist I would sell the morning after pill.

I however personally side with the argument for against it. I understand that everyone is entitled to make decisions for themselves about what direction they want to take their life.  I would say the sale of the pill would be ok for reasons such as cases of rape. I otherwise believe that everyone is put on this earth for a reason and so you should allow that life to live. Your parents kept you, they decided that you were important to them. If you personally don’t want to keep the life your responsible for creating then there are adoption agencies and programs where you can hand your child over to authorities after the first 72 hours of life to give them a better life then what you can provide for them at this point in time.

Blog Post 8: Ethical Question

Is it ethical for a physician to accept Wild tickets from a pharmaceutical rep to take her family to the game?

I think that if you are accepting the tickets under circumstances that do not pertain to work then it is alright. Otherwise I think that it is a conflict of interest and that they should not be accepted. Many may not agree with this stance, but it is my personal morals and beliefs. You do not mix business with pleasure. Many things can go wrong when this happens.

Blog Post 6: Diversity

Talk about what diversity means to you. And explain how valuing and championing diversity will help you in your career.

--Diversity, to me, means differences. These differences can vary from race to views on different issues. No two individuals are completely identical down to the core. Diversity will help in my career because not everyone will have the same viewpoints within the medical community. My hopes are to work as a pharmacist or work in pharmaceutical and medical sales. These fields can be controversial for many reasons. One major issue within the medical field is on stem cell research and if we should be tampering with the natural order of things.

Why are the goals listed above are important to me?

The goals listed above are important because I want to work as a pharmacist. When I graduate from stout I will have a Bachelors of Science degree in Applied Science with a minor in Business Administration. I have already been accepted to CVTC for the Fall 2012 for the Pharmacy Technician program. I will start to apply to pharmacy school with the ultimate goal being accepted into the pharmacy program at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Post 4: Carbon Dioxide Paper Evaluation

2. Reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of the criteria established. Where these good criteria, or should there have been different criteria established?

The criteria that had been established was very broad. As a result of this it made evaluating from the standpoint that the paper was valid in my opinion to be difficult.

3. Reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of the presentations as a whole. Consider the "yes" and "no" groups as a whole.

The presentations were very well done. They all followed the class set-up criteria for evaluating the paper. They all made very solid arguments as to why the paper was valid or invalid.

4. Reflect on the group management of your group. What went well, what did not?

We were well organized. Our group met outside of class to work on this presentation. However it didn’t work that we all were thinking that this paper was invalid and we had to argue that that this paper was valid.

5. Reflect on the personal "ethic" you felt in your group. Did you believe in your position? Where you arguing against your beliefs?

I did not believe in the position that I was defending. I was arguing against what I thought was correct. Like many stated a lot of things with this paper didn’t add up, ranging from the lack of creditability of the sources to the lack of research actually done by the authors themselves.

6. Did the class make the correct decision when considering the broader impacts of the global warming/climate change debate? Why?

Yes, the class in general did make the correct decision.  I believe this because there was more evidence to support that side of the argument.

7. Explain the statement, "What we do in the US, soon will not matter." Provide evidence to justify this statement.

Other countries are slowly surpassing the US. Most of the things that we do here in the US are results of outsourced jobs. An example of this would be the building of car parts.

8. Explain this statement, "What we do as individuals matters." Provide evidence to justify this statement.

What one person does can change a series of events. It is like the butterfly effect. The butterfly effect is saying that if one thing is different it changes the outcome of the future.

Presentation on Penny Weights

There is a powerpoint presentation, however I can not figure out how to get it to upload.

My group, like alot of the others added the hisoty of the penny. This made it seem as though you, and kind of did, hear the same presentation over and over again.

The following questions were presented to the class and this is what my group had came up with:
1) What would a penny weigh picked up from the sidewalk? A penny minted today would weigh 2.50g fresh from the mint. So you would have to adjust that value since it has been exposed to the world.

2) What would a 1908 penny weigh?  A penny fresh from the mint in 1908 weighed  3.11g, however you would have to adjust that value since it has been exposed to the world for some time.

3) What would a 1793 penny weigh? A penny fresh from the mint in 1793 weighed 13.48g, however you would have to adjust that value since it has been exposed to the world the longest out of the three pennies that are being examined.

One thing that has been expressed of how we can make our presentations better in the future would be to add in more scientific data.

Criteria for Creditability

When looking to see if something is creditable or not you need to look for a few things:

How reliable are the sources stated in the document, if there are any sources listed.
If there is any data or reproducable experiment to go along with your argument.
Does the document have a clear direction that they are trying to get the reader to see, if so how effectively are they able to get the reader to see there point of view without straying to far from the outline that they have set up for themselves.

According to our in class discussion, we will be using the following criteria to evaluate the CO2 Science Paper posted on D2L and answer the following question, "Is the paper legitimate now?" :

1) Reference/ Sources
    -Credibile, Publisher

2) Science Method Valid
   -Accuracy, Repeatability, Data Analysis, Open Perspecive, Non-bias Approach

PDP

In class we talked about Personal Development Plan, also known as a PDP, should include the following items: A mission, goals, values, and stragies of how to accomplish these things.


I think that a PDP for this class would be to present the class with scenrios that we will find in the field and talk about what/how we would handle the situation. I also think we need to look ahead to the future to see what things we could potentially encounter if we do not take the time now to address the issues.
We should also take advantage of professional resouces that are available to us, get to know professors that relate to our field of study and get involved with organizations and clubs that will help to advance our future opportunities.
